16 Rohingya men fined between RM2,000 and RM5,000 by the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court for being members of an unlawful organisation.
BUKIT MERTAJAM: A total of 16 Rohingya men were fined between RM2,000 and RM5,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today after pleading guilty to being members of an unlawful organisation.
Magistrate Roshayati Radellah imposed a RM2,000 fine on seven men, with a two-month jail term in default of payment.
The seven fined RM2,000 were Jaafar Ahmed Mohammad Shafi, 55; Mubarak Hussain Mohammad Islam, 40; Hamid Khan Kalamiah, 41; Mohamad Yunus Ismail Shorif, 34; Abu Siddiq Muhammad Husson, 41; Nur Hussain Abu Shama, 43; and Syed Hussain Oli Ahmed, 51.
In a separate proceeding, Magistrate Nurul Rasyidah Mohd Akit fined nine men RM5,000 each, with a six-month jail term in default.
The nine fined RM5,000 were Muhammad Islam Sultan Ahmad, 56; Mohd Islam Mir Ahmad, 54; Hamid Huson Ismail, 45; Nurul Amin Abdul Munaf, 45; Enamul Haque Mohammed Hussein, 43; Abdul Hamid Ahmad Husain, 29; Mohamad Nur Mustak Ahmad, 32; Abdul Kudus Daul Rahman, 42; and Sayed Amin Ruhul Amin, 36.
The higher fines for the second group reflected their roles as office-bearers of the unlawful organisation.
All were charged with being members of Pertubuhan Islam Untuk Kemajuan Rohingya Malaysia, which was declared unlawful as it was established without permission from the Registrar of Societies.
The offence occurred at Lorong Tingkat Ciku 5, Taman Ciku, here at about 3 pm on November 19.
The charge was framed under Section 42 of the Societies Act 1966, which provides for imprisonment of up to five years or a fine of up to RM15,000 or both upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutors Anis Suhada Rosli and Zulfadli Hassan handled the prosecution.
Lawyer Nursyafiqah Zainudin, from the National Legal Aid Foundation, represented seven of the accused, while lawyer Y. Anbananthan represented the remaining nine.
