A lorry driver denies involvement in an armed gang robbery at a Bangsar clinic, where a Pakistani worker was allegedly held up with a parang and robbed of a ring
KUALA LUMPUR: A lorry driver has pleaded not guilty to a charge of armed gang robbery at a clinic in Bangsar earlier this month.
P Sangara Lingam, 50, was jointly accused with another individual, who remains at large, of robbing 35-year-old Pakistani clinic worker Sajid Ahmed Abbasi.
The alleged offence, involving a parang, took place at 2 pm on March 4 and resulted in the theft of a ring.
The charge was framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and caning.
Deputy public prosecutor Nor Aisyah Mohamed Zanyuin did not oppose bail but requested it be set at RM10,000 with one surety.
She also sought conditions requiring the accused to report monthly to a police station and not interfere with witnesses.
Defence counsel Tripatjit Singh requested minimal bail, citing his client’s family responsibilities and health issues.
“He is responsible for two school-going children and has an ailing mother suffering from kidney disease,” said Singh.
The lawyer added that his client suffers from intestinal issues and had cooperated fully with the investigation.
Judge Suhaila Haron granted bail at RM7,000 with one surety and imposed the prosecution’s requested conditions.
The case has been set for mention again on April 17.
