Namewee to submit representation over drug possession charges

Rapper Namewee will submit a representation to review two drug-related charges, with the court setting April 8 for a prosecution update

KUALA LUMPUR: Rapper Wee Meng Chee, known as Namewee, will submit a representation to review two charges of drug possession.

His lawyer, Nur Aminahtul Mardiah Md Nor, informed the court that the submission would be made within a week.

She requested a new date for the prosecution to update the court on the representation’s status.

Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim then fixed April 8 for the prosecution to inform the court of any developments.

Namewee, 43, faces a charge of possessing 1.57 grammes of methamphetamine in a hotel room on Jalan Conlay last October.

The charge is framed under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

It carries a maximum penalty of a RM100,000 fine, up to five years’ imprisonment, or both.

He is also charged with possessing 0.78 grammes of Sildenafil at the same location and time.

This charge is under Section 9(1) of the Poisons Act 1952, with a maximum penalty of a RM50,000 fine, up to five years’ jail, or both.

On a separate charge last December, Namewee was acquitted and discharged.

The prosecution withdrew a charge of administering drugs after pathology results returned negative.
