Rapper Namewee’s court hearings for drug charges are postponed after he contracts Influenza A, with new dates set for later this month and next year.
KUALA LUMPUR: Mention proceedings for two drug cases involving rapper Wee Meng Chee, known as Namewee, were postponed today.
The 42-year-old was unable to attend separate Magistrate’s Courts here after being infected with Influenza A.
His counsel, Joshua Tay, informed the courts that his client was unwell. “Our side has submitted a medical leave certificate as well as a medical report from a hospital confirming that our client has been infected with Influenza A,” Joshua said.
The medical leave was granted for three days starting yesterday.
Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim and Magistrate S. Arunjothy fixed new mention dates for December 22 and January 19, respectively.
In the first case, Namewee is accused of possessing about 5.12 grammes of suspected Ecstasy in a hotel room along Jalan Conlay on October 22.
The charge under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 carries a potential jail term of two to five years and caning.
The second charge relates to a urine test that allegedly found Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, THC and Ketamine in his system.
This charge carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or up to two years’ imprisonment.
