Restaurant operator pleads not guilty to injuring doctor at Perai toll

A restaurant operator pleaded not guilty to injuring a doctor by driving into him at the Perai Toll Plaza, with bail set at RM5,000.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A restaurant operator pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here today to causing injury to a doctor last week.

Khor Wei Yeak, 32, was charged with intentionally causing hurt to L. Avinash, 32, by driving into him in an RFID lane at the Perai Toll Plaza.

The incident occurred at 11.30 pm on December 28 in Seberang Perai Tengah.

The charge was framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ jail, a fine, whipping, or any two of these punishments.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Nur Amalina Harun proposed bail of RM8,000 for the accused.

The accused’s lawyer, C. Hari Prassaad Rao, appealed for a lower amount, citing his client’s one-year-old child and monthly income of RM1,500 to RM2,000.

Magistrate Nurul Rasyidah Mohd Akit allowed bail of RM5,000 with one surety.

The court set March 4 for the submission of case documents and medical reports.

Khor and his 23-year-old wife were previously detained to assist in an attempted murder investigation.

Their detention followed the viral spread of CCTV footage capturing the incident.
