Couple held, drugs worth over RM728,000 seized

Police arrest a couple and seize drugs worth over RM728,000 in a hotel raid in Genting Permai, Bentong

KUANTAN: Police arrested a couple and seized various types of drugs estimated to be worth more than RM728,000 at a hotel in Genting Permai, Bentong, on Monday.

Acting Pahang police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob said the suspects, a 37-year-old local man and a 35-year-old foreign woman, were arrested by a police team at the hotel’s parking area at about 5 pm.

He said searches of a hotel room and a car led to the discovery of various types of drugs, including an estimated 2.9 kilogrammes (kg) of ketamine, 1.01 kg of cocaine, 671 grammes of MDMA powder, and 538 grammes of methamphetamine.

“Preliminary investigations found that the couple were believed to have acted as couriers for the illicit drugs, which were supplied from the Klang Valley for distribution in the east coast region.

“They are believed to have been involved in the activity for the past three months, and the drugs seized were capable of affecting more than 10,000 users,” he said at a press conference at the Pahang contingent police headquarters (IPK) here today.

He said neither suspect had any previous criminal record, and preliminary urine screening tests found both had tested positive for methamphetamine.

The couple have been remanded for seven days until July 6 to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Meanwhile, Azry Akmar said 333 individuals aged between 19 and 65 were arrested for various drug-related offences during Ops Hawk, which was carried out from June 28 until yesterday.

He said that during the operation, various assets suspected to have been acquired through drug trafficking activities, including cash and vehicles worth nearly RM80,000, were also seized.
