Customs seize RM6.2mil worth of marijuana in Kuala Perlis bust

Malaysian Customs foil smuggling attempt, seizing 67.48kg of marijuana worth over RM6.2 million from an abandoned wooden boat in Kuala Perlis

KUALA PERLIS: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department foiled a major drug smuggling attempt last month, seizing 67.48 kilograms of marijuana flowers.

The drugs, estimated to be worth over RM6.2 million, were discovered at the Tambak Persisiran Pantai Bukit Putih area.

Kedah Customs director Wan Marini Wan Hamzah said the operation was intelligence-based and conducted around 10 pm.

Officers from the Langkawi Marine Enforcement Branch and the elite Customs Operational Battle Force Response Assault team participated.

Authorities found an abandoned wooden boat carrying four gunny sacks labeled in Thai.

Further inspection confirmed the sacks contained a large quantity of marijuana flowers.

The total weight of the seized narcotics was 67.48 kilograms, with an estimated value of RM6,209,816.

Wan Marini stated the drugs were believed to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country using the wooden boat.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

She urged public support for Customs in combating smuggling activities involving cigarettes, alcohol, fireworks, drugs, and vehicles.

Such crimes cause significant financial losses and threaten national security and public safety, she added. – Bernama
