Malaysian man held in Thailand with RM9 million worth of ketamine

A 25-year-old Malaysian was arrested in Thailand with 75kg of ketamine worth RM9 million, suspected of being a cross-border drug transporter

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian man has been arrested in Thailand on suspicion of transporting drugs for a cross-border syndicate.

Thai authorities apprehended the 25-year-old during a roadblock in Chumphon province last Thursday.

They discovered 75kg of ketamine hidden inside the car he was driving.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed the arrest was communicated through official channels.

“The man was arrested at a roadblock in Chumphon province, where 75kg of ketamine was found in the car he was driving on Nov 6,” he said.

Hussein noted the suspect hails from northern Malaysia and has four previous criminal records.

Thai media reported the arrest occurred at a roadblock in Hong Charoen Subdistrict, Tha Sae District.

Police stopped a black Nissan with Malaysian registration plates that appeared suspicious.

An X-ray scan revealed a hidden compartment at the rear of the vehicle.

Inside, officers found vacuum-sealed plastic packages containing 75kg of ketamine.

The drugs have an estimated street value of 70 million baht, equivalent to approximately RM9 million.

The suspect allegedly confessed to being hired for RM5,000 to drive the car from Bangkok to Malaysia.

He claimed he was unaware the vehicle contained illegal substances.

Thai authorities charged him with possessing and selling Category 2 psychotropic substances without permission.

The charges relate to commercial drug distribution that could spread substances among the public. – Bernama
