Police in Melaka detained 15 Myanmar nationals, including a suspected agent, for alleged human trafficking and migrant smuggling offences.
MELAKA: Police have detained 15 Myanmar nationals on suspicion of involvement in human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
The group, comprising 10 men and five women, was arrested during an Op Pintas raid at a hotel lobby in Ayer Keroh yesterday.
Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Christopher Patit said the operation followed intelligence from the Criminal Investigation Department.
“One of those detained is believed to be an agent involved in human trafficking and migrant smuggling,” he said in a statement.
Police seized a motorcycle and a mobile phone from the suspected agent.
All suspects, aged between 21 and 39, have been remanded until 15 January next year.
They are being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.
Investigations are also being conducted under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Patit thanked the public for providing information leading to the operation.
