A police officer has been detained after his patrol vehicle collided with two motorcycles, killing one rider and injuring another in Kangar.
KANGAR: A police officer has been detained after the four-wheel-drive patrol vehicle he was driving was involved in an accident that killed one motorcyclist and injured another.
The incident occurred on Jalan Persiaran Wawasan last night at 10.20 pm while the officer was believed to be performing patrol duties.
Kangar District Police Chief ACP Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the police vehicle collided with two motorcycles coming from the opposite direction.
“A 24-year-old motorcyclist died at the scene, while the other injured victim, aged 25, is in the yellow zone at Tuanku Fauziah Hospital and is reported to be conscious,” he said in a statement.
The deceased victim was taken to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Kedah for a post-mortem examination.
Initial investigations found that the accident was believed to be caused by the negligence of the vehicle driver.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving resulting in death.
Police urged members of the public with information to come forward and assist with the investigation.
The community was also advised not to spread speculation that could disturb public order.
A video of the incident has been circulating on social media showing the police officer being surrounded by a crowd immediately after the incident occurred.
