Penang council reports viral TikTok video over false claims

MBPP lodges police and MCMC reports over a viral TikTok video containing false allegations about a shophouse development approval process.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has lodged police and MCMC reports over a viral TikTok video containing false allegations.

The council stated the video, uploaded on December 1, contains untrue and defamatory accusations about a shophouse development.

It stressed all statements in the video are baseless and mislead the public.

“The Royal Malaysia Police is currently conducting an investigation,” the council said in a statement.

It added it is ready to face court and provide full cooperation if the case is brought to trial.

MBPP detailed the project’s approval history to counter the claims.

The planning permission application was submitted by Brilliantcap Holdings Sdn. Bhd. on June 9, 2016.

Adjacent lot owners were notified of their right to object, but no objections were received.

The One Stop Centre Committee approved the application on February 21, 2017.

The building plan was later approved on October 20, 2021, after technical department feedback.

Commencement of work approval was granted on December 15, 2022 for eight shophouse units.

A Traffic Impact Assessment was approved on November 5, 2015.

Fire and Rescue Department approval was obtained on June 28, 2016.

MBPP remains open to official queries and encourages obtaining full information before making social media claims.

The viral video was titled ‘Tiada Perjuangan Tanpa Pengorbanan’ (No Struggle Without Sacrifice).

It questioned MBPP’s approval of a commercial project next to a residential area.
