Perak Exco lodges police report over false dog cruelty claims

Perak state executive councillor Sandrea Ng files police and MCMC reports against false social media allegations of animal cruelty by Ipoh City Council.

IPOH: Perak Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching has lodged a police report over what she calls baseless social media allegations of animal cruelty by authorities.

The Teja state assemblyman also filed a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission regarding a Facebook post accusing the state government and Ipoh City Council of cruel actions against stray dogs.

“The accusations used extreme expressions such as ‘hands stained with blood’ and ‘buried alive’, which are unfounded and have the potential to mislead the public,” Ng said.

She stated that such false information, coupled with provocative language, could incite public fear and anger while tarnishing the reputation of civil servants and animal welfare organisations.

Ng emphasised that the state government remains open to policy criticism, provided it is factual and accompanied by proposed solutions.

She described the stray dog issue as a complex challenge requiring a realistic approach and continuous cooperation between government, local authorities, animal welfare groups and the community.

“Over the past five months, the state government through MBI has worked with the Friends of Pawsitive organisation by allowing it to claim captured dogs at a discounted fee,” she said.

Ng added that the Perak Pawsitive Initiative programme has implemented various efforts, including sterilisation subsidies for 1,308 animals over three years.

The programme also includes public awareness campaigns and the development of a stray animal management system for more sustainable solutions.
