Police call on parents to monitor teens after traffic crackdown

Kuala Lumpur police urge parents to monitor children’s night movements after a major traffic operation finds most motorcyclists checked were teenagers

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have urged parents to closely monitor their children’s night-time movements following a major traffic enforcement operation in the capital.

The call came after authorities discovered that the majority of motorcyclists checked during the overnight operation were teenagers.

Deputy Chief of the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Supt Suffian Abdullah said riders aged between 15 and 21 formed the largest group inspected.

The integrated operation was conducted from 8pm until 5am in the early hours of Sunday.

Approximately 2,000 vehicles were inspected across Jalan Pahang, Jalan Genting Kelang and Jalan Semarak.

A total of 797 summonses were issued during the operation.

“A total of 80 motorcycles were also seized for suspected illegal modifications and for not meeting specified standards,” Suffian told reporters.

He added that a 19-year-old male teenager was detained for a vehicle registration number offence.

Another rider fled the scene, abandoning an extensively modified motorcycle.

Suffian highlighted a concerning trend of teenagers deceiving their parents about their whereabouts.

He said some youths gave excuses to their parents about going out for pre-dawn meals (sahur) when they were actually involved in street gang activities.

“We urge parents or guardians to pay attention to their children because some are giving unreasonable excuses to leave the house,” he said.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal racing and modified vehicles in the city.
