Sarawak JPJ launches Christmas safety op for express buses

Sarawak JPJ’s 10-day Christmas operation inspects buses in Kuching, Sibu and Miri, focusing on brakes, tyres and mandatory driver urine tests

SIBU: The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has launched a 10-day special Christmas operation to ensure the safety of express bus passengers.

Codenamed ‘Ops Khas Krismas’, the operation began on Thursday and involves detailed vehicle inspections at key terminals.

Director Norizan Jili said inspections in Kuching, Sibu and Miri started three days prior, focusing on technical aspects like braking systems, tyres and seatbelts.

“This inspection is important to ensure passenger safety, especially during the increased movement expected during the festive season,” he told reporters at the Sibu Bus Terminal.

He said the operation targets main bus terminals in Kuching, Sibu and Miri, with a focus on accident-prone areas.

The department is also collaborating with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) to mandate urine tests for all bus drivers.

“If found positive, the driver will be immediately replaced by the operating company,” Norizan added.

He urged the public to report drivers seen using mobile phones, speeding or driving dangerously.
