Marine police in Kelantan arrest three men, including two with drug records, for possessing 10 tonnes of suspected smuggled Siamese rice.
TUMPAT: Three men were arrested yesterday for possessing 10 tonnes of suspected smuggled Siamese rice.
The suspects, aged between 16 and 44, were detained in a lorry at Kampung Kebakat, Wakaf Bharu.
Region Three Marine Police Force acting commander DSP Muhamad Keny Anyie Abdullah said the arrests were made under the Operasi Taring Gelora operation.
A patrol team followed the lorry from Kampung Bendang Pok Yong before stopping it.
“Inspection found that the lorry was carrying 200 sacks of imported white rice weighing 50 kg each,” he said in a statement today.
The total value of the seizure, including the vehicle, is estimated at RM290,000.
Two of the suspects have previous drug-related criminal records.
The case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994.
It has been referred to the Kota Bharu Padi and Rice Regulatory Division for further action.
