Young adults aged 21-30 top telecom scam victims in Malaysia

Malaysians aged 21-30 were the biggest telecom fraud victims in 2024, with 8,789 cases reported and total losses hitting RM715 million.

KUALA LUMPUR: Young adults aged between 21 and 30 were the most frequent victims of telecommunications fraud in Malaysia from January to November this year.

A total of 8,789 individuals in that age bracket fell prey to such scams, according to the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID).

Nationwide, 28,698 telecom crime cases were reported during the 11-month period, resulting in losses amounting to RM715 million.

The 31 to 40 age group recorded the second-highest number of victims, totalling 6,825 people.

Those aged 41 to 50 followed with 4,977 victims, while 3,382 individuals were aged between 51 and 60.

Seniors aged over 60 were involved in 2,763 cases, and the 15- to 20-year-old age group recorded 1,962 victims.

“This shows that telecommunications crimes affect all age groups, and the public is advised to remain vigilant and not be easily deceived by any form of fraud,” the CCID stated.

The department advised victims to lodge a report with the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997.

They should also verify information through the Semak Mule portal and report the incident to the police for further action.
