Flood-prone village in Dungun appeals for new mosque on higher ground

Kampung Pasir Raja residents urge government to build a new mosque on safer, elevated land to avoid frequent monsoon flooding disruptions.

DUNGUN: Residents of a village frequently hit by monsoon floods have appealed to the government to construct a new mosque to ensure safety and comfort for worshippers.

Imam Bustaman Abdullah said the nearly 50-year-old Kampung Pasir Raja Mosque is situated in a low-lying area near a river, making it prone to flooding during heavy rain.

“Each time it floods, residents find it hard to get to the mosque, and sometimes Friday prayers cannot be performed as the prayer hall is submerged,” he said.

The mosque, which accommodates about 100 people, has undergone several renovations including raising the prayer hall by three metres to prevent flooding.

Bustaman added that a site for a new mosque has already been identified on higher ground, which would be safer from flood risks.

Kampung Pasir Raja Village Development and Security Committee chairman Tengku Mat Yunus Tengku Mat Rani said several applications for a new mosque have been sent to authorities without a positive response yet.

He said the proposed new mosque, featuring various facilities, is expected to provide villagers with greater comfort when performing prayers.

“We hope the authorities and the government can speed up the construction of the mosque so that residents won’t face problems during floods and flood-related damage and losses can be reduced,” he said.
