Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh commits to safeguarding traditional Malay villages, including Kampung Baru, as a national heritage priority
PUTRAJAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has assured that preserving traditional Malay villages in the Federal Territories remains a top priority.
She said the conservation of these villages across Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan aligns with the government’s commitment to safeguarding local heritage.
Yeoh highlighted her parliamentary record in defending the interests of traditional villages, including Kampung Sungai Penchala.
“Regarding the preservation of Malay traditional villages in the Federal Territories, don’t worry,” she told reporters after her official reporting-in ceremony.
“You can check my record; I’ve always been vocal about the importance of preserving these villages.”
She noted that commercial buildings are abundant, but traditional villages are increasingly rare and must be protected.
“Commercial buildings are easy to find, but traditional villages are becoming harder to come by,” she added.
On the specific issue of Kampung Baru, Yeoh said her team would gather the latest information from all relevant officials before making decisions.
She noted the Kampung Baru issue is not new and has been debated in Parliament multiple times.
“I have discussed this with Titiwangsa MP Datuk Seri Johari Ghani, and we will continue the work that was started,” she said.
Yeoh clarified that her appointment does not signal opposition to development, but rather a focus on sustainability.
“I am never against development, but I oppose unsustainable development,” she stated.
She cited the need for caution in Kuala Lumpur due to risks of heavy rain, landslides, and flash floods.
Her administration will prioritise improving basic municipal services over events, she added.
“We want residents who pay assessment fees to feel satisfied, knowing their basic needs are being properly taken care of,” Yeoh said.
She also stressed that MPs must be consulted before any development approval is granted.
“As an MP, I know how important it is to engage with them first,” she said, referring to local representatives.
On local government elections, Yeoh emphasised that decisions require consensus within the Unity Government.
“For local elections, don’t worry. No single party can move forward on its own,” she added.
