Investigation underway for Sungai Ara sinkhole cause

Authorities investigate Sungai Ara sinkhole that closed Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim, with water and sewerage agencies checking underground pipelines.

GEORGE TOWN: Investigations are intensifying to determine what caused a sinkhole to form on Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim in Sungai Ara, Bayan Lepas.

Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari confirmed the road remains temporarily closed as authorities identify necessary follow-up actions.

“As an initial mitigation measure, plastic barriers have been installed, and traffic is being diverted through Jalan Sungai Ara 1, Jalan Persiaran Relau and Jalan Kedidi,” he said in a statement.

Zairil added that Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang and Indah Water Konsortium are conducting comprehensive inspections of underground pipeline systems.

The sinkhole appeared in front of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sungai Ara with dimensions measuring five metres long, 3.5 metres wide and 1.9 metres deep. – Bernama
