KEMAS teachers trained for special needs preschools

KEMAS teachers are undergoing intensive training for special needs children ahead of the 2026 launch of Tabika Tunas Istimewa preschools across all states.

KUALA LUMPUR: Teachers at Taman Bimbingan Kanak-Kanak (Tabika) KEMAS are receiving intensive training to manage children with special needs ahead of next year’s launch of Tabika Tunas Istimewa @ KEMAS.

Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang said the specialised training follows the Ministry of Education’s model and includes temporary placements in MOE special classes for practical experience.

A total of 14 Tabika Tunas Istimewa @ KEMAS will open nationwide next year, focusing particularly on children with autism spectrum disorders.

Teacher selection will prioritise candidates with caring personalities, strong interest in children, and ability to manage special needs students.

From 2027, recruitment will favour candidates holding diplomas in Early Childhood Education or Special Education, or those with relevant experience and interest.

The government will use existing buildings for the preschools, with this year’s pilot project costing RM457,696 covering refurbishment, equipment, training, and food assistance.

Next year’s estimated RM5 million allocation will cover building upgrades, equipment, teacher training, food assistance, grants, and various allowances for the 14 preschools.

Rubiah provided these details when responding to a question from Zahari Kechik (Jeli) in the Dewan Rakyat.
