A feasibility study on amending the Federal Capital Act to allow local council elections and a directly elected mayor for Kuala Lumpur is expected by month’s end
KUALA LUMPUR: A feasibility study on amending the Federal Capital Act 1960 to enable local council elections and a directly elected mayor for Kuala Lumpur is expected to be completed by the end of this month.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said the study, being conducted by the International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM), is currently underway with an interim report already presented to the government.
“The study will be ready after March, otherwise they will meet with us,” she told a press conference today.
She added that the research team has already met with officials and presented an interim report, but stakeholder interviews are still ongoing.
Yeoh stated that a presentation to the Cabinet has not yet been scheduled as she must first await the final study.
The study was initiated last December following a Private Member’s Bill tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.
Previously, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil urged all parties not to underestimate the capability of public universities like UIAM to conduct such a feasibility study.
