PM Anwar says authorities have full latitude to fight corruption and stop illegal e-waste imports, with thousands of containers smuggled monthly.
BANGI: The government has given full authority to relevant agencies to combat corruption and abuse of power, including illegal electronic waste importation.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Cabinet took a firm stance today to prohibit any act making Malaysia a dumping ground for e-waste.
He noted persistent weaknesses and inconsistencies in contracts and tenders despite continuous reminders.

“The decision by the Cabinet is to completely prohibit Malaysia from becoming a dumping ground for e-waste,” Anwar told reporters after Friday prayers.
He stated these matters must be closely monitored, and he has given full latitude to the authorities.
Media reported last Wednesday that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) would intensify probes into illegal e-waste imports.
Intelligence suggests between 2,000 and 3,000 containers of e-waste are smuggled into the country through major ports each month.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said several ministries were under surveillance over procurement issues, including the Defence Ministry.
Anwar added that several parties submitted a comprehensive investigation report on corruption to him today.
The report came from the MACC, National Audit Department, Bank Negara Malaysia and the Inland Revenue Board.
“Their task is to clean up the remaining traces of corruption and abuse of power,” he said.
Last Friday, Anwar said all procurement decisions involving the armed forces and police linked to corruption were temporarily shelved.
The government will review and restructure all procurement processes to ensure transparency within the existing system. – Bernama
