Malaysia has unified ASEAN’s climate position ahead of COP30, positioning the region as a collective force in global climate negotiations.
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has solidified ASEAN’s position on the global climate stage by securing regional consensus ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii confirmed ASEAN environment ministers adopted a landmark joint statement during September’s 18th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment in Langkawi.
The statement received formal approval at the 47th ASEAN Summit on October 26 and will be presented at COP30.
“This joint statement not only serves as a critical opportunity for ASEAN to collectively influence global climate action but also articulates ASEAN’s common positions on key issues,” Huang stated.
He highlighted that Malaysia facilitated dialogue between ASEAN ministers and COP30 President Designate André Corrêa do Lago during the Langkawi meeting.
This engagement successfully aligned ASEAN’s priorities with Brazil’s ‘Amazon COP’ vision.
Malaysia will showcase both national and regional climate action through the Malaysia Pavilion at COP30, serving as ASEAN’s platform for sustainability diplomacy.
The Pavilion will amplify Southeast Asian voices while highlighting key regional initiatives.
Malaysia reaffirmed its whole-of-nation approach to climate change across industry, energy, community and government sectors.
The Malaysia Pavilion theme ‘Climate Action Now: Net Zero Pathways Unlocked’ will feature at COP30 from November 10 to 21.
Huang noted Malaysia’s climate frameworks including the National Climate Change Policy 2.0 and National Energy Transition Roadmap are steering the country toward its 2050 net-zero target.
Regional cooperation through initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid supports cross-border renewable energy trade.
Malaysia is now holistically prepared to achieve its carbon neutrality goal while balancing energy security, affordability and sustainability. – Bernama
