Malaysian police to meet rally organisers ahead of Modi visit

Home Ministry urges public to avoid gatherings during Indian PM’s official visit, citing security and diplomatic protocol.

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry has urged the public to refrain from holding gatherings in public places during the official visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this weekend.

In a statement, the ministry said police would meet the organisers of a rally scheduled for Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. The police will request their cooperation in not proceeding with the planned gathering.

The Royal Malaysia Police is responsible for ensuring no incidents disrupt public order during the visit. The ministry stated the visit reflects the strong diplomatic ties and mutual respect between Malaysia and India.

It added that the police would carry out their duties professionally to ensure public safety and national stability. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a two-day official visit to Malaysia from Saturday until Sunday.

A peaceful rally related to encroachment and illegal construction of places of worship is scheduled in Kuala Lumpur. The rally is reportedly expected to involve 141 non-governmental organisations.

Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed the government would not allow disruptions. He said this during a Cabinet meeting, noting the country is hosting foreign guests.

Fahmi also said the government would take firm measures to ensure the safety of visiting dignitaries. The measures are to be enforced throughout their stay in Malaysia.
