A 14-year-old boy wins a BMW 5 Series in a national savings draw, proving the value of consistent saving over chasing prizes.
KUALA LUMPUR: While most teenagers are still negotiating pocket money and permission slips, a 14-year-old local boy has just learnt a far more grown-up lesson – that patience, discipline and a savings habit can pay off in spectacular fashion.
Che Thaqif Dzakwan Che Mazlan is the unlikely new owner of a BMW 5 Series after clinching the top prize in Bank Simpanan Nasional’s (BSN) SSP Cabutan Simpanan Konsisten draw for December 2025 – a win that left him stunned, smiling and momentarily speechless.
Describing the moment as “an unexpected blessing falling into our laps”, the soft-spoken teenager said the news felt almost unreal.
“It honestly felt like a dream. When my father told me, I couldn’t quite believe it.”
For now, the luxury sedan will remain firmly a family affair.
Che Thaqif, who is still years away from a driving licence, said there were no immediate plans for solo joyrides.
“At the moment, it will be for family use. Maybe later, when I’m older, we’ll see whether I continue my studies or take driving lessons alongside school,” he said with a shy grin.
Even his friends are yet to catch wind of his big break.
“They don’t know yet. Maybe they’ll find out later,” he added.
Che Thaqif said he had always dreamed of owning a sedan – but never imagined it would come this early, or in this form.
“Receiving a BMW is really exciting. It’s more than I ever expected,” he said, expressing gratitude for what he called an extraordinary surprise.
His father, Che Mazlan Che Jaafar, 49, said the win was deeply rewarding – but stressed that it was never the goal.
“We never saved with the intention of winning prizes.
“Of course, people joke about becoming millionaires, but our focus was simply to save for our child,” he said.
Che Thaqif began saving seriously at the age of 12, meaning the BMW arrived just over two years into that habit.
“We are thrilled for him. It’s a very special moment for our family, and we are truly grateful,” Che Mazlan said.
He noted that BSN’s SSP scheme is often misunderstood as a short-term savings vehicle or a ticket to the so-called ‘millionaire’ draw, rather than a long-term financial tool.
“For us, SSP is just supplementary savings alongside other accounts. The intention has always been to save – winning is merely a bonus,” he said.
Che Mazlan urged parents to see saving not as a chore, but as a long-term investment in their children’s financial resilience.
“We don’t follow a rigid routine. We simply put aside money every month. The key is consistency and discipline.
“The goal is to teach children the habit of saving and to make sure they have a financial cushion in the future. Any prizes that come along should be seen as extra – not the objective.”
For now, the BMW remains parked firmly in family territory.
“In the future, we’ll decide. But right now, it’s for everyone,” he said.
BSN SSP is a savings product that allows customers to participate in periodic draws offering various prizes. For the Cabutan Simpanan Konsisten category, participants must be at least 12 years old, maintain a minimum balance of RM500, and deposit RM500 monthly for three consecutive months prior to the draw.
