MCMC’s Safe Internet Campaign reaches 8,216 schools, surpassing its 2025 target, focusing on cyberbullying, scams and child protection online
KUALA LUMPUR: The Safe Internet Campaign organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has surpassed its 2025 target of 8,000 schools and educational institutions.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced that as of November 20, the campaign had reached 8,216 schools and educational institutions nationwide.
“Today alone, the Safe Internet Campaign is being held in 58 schools, which for me is important for us to enhance,” he told reporters after officiating the Lembah Pantai Indian Community Cyber Fraud Awareness Seminar.
Fahmi emphasized that with over 10,000 primary and secondary schools nationwide, these remain the primary focus for the internet safety initiative.
He explained the campaign’s urgency stems from growing online threats beyond cyberbullying, including scams, paedophilia and sexual crimes against children.
The ministry is confident the campaign will reach every school nationwide by the first quarter of next year.
The Safe Internet Campaign aims to educate users, particularly students, on safe and responsible internet usage.
Its objectives include increasing digital literacy and creating a more positive online environment.
The programme focuses on critical issues like cyberbullying, online scams, digital gambling and child sexual abuse content.
Fahmi also reminded parents to discourage children aged below 16 from using social media platforms.
He expressed hope that social media platform operators would comply with the government’s decision to prohibit under-16s from having social media accounts. – Bernama
