MCMC investigates threats against Terengganu royal family on social media

MCMC is investigating an individual for uploading threatening and offensive content about the Terengganu royal family on platform X, with a device seized for forensic analysis

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating an individual believed to have uploaded threatening, offensive and extreme content targeting the Terengganu royal family via a personal account on platform X.

A statement from MCMC today said the content was found to touch on the sensitivities of the royal institution and contained elements of insult and threats that could potentially incite hatred, public tension and disturb national peace.

“To assist the investigation, the individual concerned has been called in for a statement recording session conducted at the Lanchang Police Station yesterday,” the statement read.

According to MCMC, a mobile phone unit along with a SIM card were seized for digital forensic analysis purposes.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment or a fine of RM500,000 or both, upon conviction.

The statement informed that MCMC will not compromise on any misuse of social media containing elements of threats, sedition of hatred or insults against the royal institution.

The public is reminded not to misuse digital platforms to spread unlawful content.

“Enforcement action will be taken strictly and professionally in accordance with existing laws regardless of the background of any party,” according to MCMC.
