New drag racing circuit to be built in Sepang next year

The Sun Webdesk

KUALA LUMPUR: A drag racing circuit will be constructed in Sepang next year to bolster motorsports development nationwide.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim confirmed the project will proceed with a RM2 million allocation from Sepang International Circuit’s internal funds.

He stated that success in Sepang could lead to similar circuits being replicated in other locations.

Adam Adli responded to Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s query about building grassroots motorsports circuits during the Dewan Rakyat session.

The minister explained that previous proposals for drag circuits in every state require deeper study before implementation.

He revealed that building a basic drag racing circuit would cost between RM6 million and RM8 million.

This cost covers a race strip of either 201 or 402 metres plus a stopping zone of 600 to 800 metres.

The Motorsports Association of Malaysia established these specifications to meet safety standards for high-acceleration racing.

Additional supporting facilities would increase the total cost significantly according to the deputy minister.

Required facilities include a control centre, scrutineering room, fitness centre and other safety amenities.

These extra facilities are estimated to cost between RM9 million and RM11 million.

Combining both elements brings the total circuit construction cost to RM15 million to RM20 million.

Therefore the ministry believes comprehensive study is essential before proceeding with broader implementation. – Bernama
