Anwar warns of moral decline, stresses importance of protecting family institution

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim cautions that rapid modernisation without strong values risks a moral and family crisis in Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has cautioned that Malaysia risks a moral and family crisis if rapid modernisation and global influences are not balanced with strong cultural and religious values.

He warned that without such grounding, the nation could face the erosion of ethical standards and the weakening of the family institution.

Speaking at the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration here today, Anwar said Malaysia must remain vigilant against what he described as the growing decline of ethical and family values in modern societies.

“With modernity and rapid change, we also see the phenomenon of moral decline and the weakening of the family institution,

“While globalisation and Western influence have brought positive developments, they have also introduced social challenges that require careful management.

“We accept many positive influences from the West, but we must also acknowledge that some developments have led to a breakdown of values, including moral and ethical standards and the weakening of family structures,” he said.

Anwar stressed that safeguarding the family unit must remain a national priority.

He said Malaysia must strike a balance between embracing technological advancement and preserving its cultural identity and values.

“We must reach for the skies — new technologies, digital transformation and artificial intelligence.

“But while reaching for the skies, we must remain rooted in the earth,” he said.

He explained that “remaining rooted” means preserving faith, culture, traditions and values through strong family institutions.

“This is part of the distinct approach of Malaysia Madani — pursuing progress while maintaining our moral and cultural foundations,” he added.
