Emergency food aid reaches flood-isolated Sarawak communities

Rescue teams deliver tonnes of supplies to thousands stranded by week-long flooding in remote Sarawak districts

KUCHING: Emergency responders are successfully transporting large quantities of essential supplies to thousands of residents in isolated Sarawak communities affected by flooding that has lasted more than a week.

Updates from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department and State Public Communications Unit indicate ongoing relief operations across multiple districts in the state’s southern and central regions, including Sri Aman, Tatau, Sebauh, and additional rural areas.

Relief teams from Sarawak Bomba and the Civil Defence Unit are using rescue vessels to navigate floodwaters and deliver provisions to affected communities.

In Tatau district, where water levels have reached up to two meters at various longhouses, emergency workers are distributing approximately 800 kilograms of food supplies to each settlement. Meanwhile, longhouse communities in Ulu Sebauh are receiving around 1.2 tonnes of aid per location, based on field reports.

According to the State Public Communications Unit, these provisions come from established supply depots and primarily consist of rice along with other fundamental daily necessities. Distribution quantities are calculated based on the population size of each affected area.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department personnel are spearheading the distribution efforts, supported by Civil Defence Unit members and welfare officers.

This current flood episode has significantly impacted multiple districts throughout Sarawak. The southern region has seen Kuching, Serian, and Samarahan affected. Central areas experiencing flooding include Sri Aman, Betong, Sibu, and Mukah. Northern districts dealing with inundation are Tatau, Sebauh, Bintulu, Miri, and Lawas.
