Fire destroys 95% of Kuching waste management plant

A major fire has destroyed a waste management plant in Kuching, with hazardous chemicals on site prompting a specialised Hazmat team response.

KUCHING: A fire has destroyed nearly 95% of a waste management plant in Jalan Mambong.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at about 2.28pm.

The blaze involved a plant measuring approximately 150 by 200 feet and is believed to have started outside before spreading into the building.

Fire personnel found the fire still raging upon arrival, with the Operations Commander confirming the presence of three high-risk chemicals.

These chemicals—nitric acid, propionic acid and ammonium sulphate—required strict safety controls throughout the operation.

The department’s Hazardous Materials Unit team was mobilised to provide specialised assistance.

Aerial monitoring using drones was conducted to assess the fire’s extent and assist with tactical planning.

As of 6.40pm, the fire had been fully brought under control.

Overhaul work was still ongoing to ensure there was no further danger.
