Fisherman missing after boat collision off Johor coast

A fisherman is missing after his boat capsized in a collision with another vessel near Pengerang, with search operations now underway.

KOTA TINGGI: A 55-year-old fisherman is missing after his boat capsized following a collision with another vessel off Pengerang.

The district police chief, Superintendent Yusof Othman, said the incident occurred around 9.50 pm yesterday.

Preliminary investigations found the victim’s fibre boat, which was carrying him and a 32-year-old foreign worker, was hit by an unidentified vessel.

The foreign worker was found safe after clinging to part of the capsized boat.

Police were alerted to the incident by the missing fisherman’s wife.

A joint search operation is now being conducted by the Pengerang Marine Police Region Two and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

Yusof has urged local fishermen in the area to assist in the search.

He also asked anyone with information to contact the nearest police station, the Kota Tinggi Police Headquarters Operations Room at 07-883 7222, or Pengerang Police Station acting chief Sergeant Romeo Usit at 011-10182027.
