Flood mitigation efforts bring relief to Lumadan residents

Lumadan’s flood duration reduced from months to weeks through river widening and water diversion projects, with 95% water supply coverage achieved

BEAUFORT: The Lumadan state constituency has seen significant improvements in flood management after implementing various mitigation measures.

Assemblyman Datuk Ruslan Muharam confirmed that flood durations have been dramatically reduced from months to approximately one week.

River widening and deepening works at the Lumadan river mouth have helped control flash flood issues in Kampung Lumadan and Bukau.

A three-kilometre diversion channel for Sungai Padas from Kampung Suasa to Weston has accelerated floodwater flow to the sea.

“Besides flooding, the water supply issue is almost resolved, with 95% of the 84 villages now receiving clean water,” Ruslan said.

Only three villages, including Kampung Jabang, still await full water supply connections.

The remaining pipe connections will be completed soon to ensure all residents have full access.

Ruslan acknowledged that this track record has contributed to a more positive campaign atmosphere.

“These are not empty promises; these are results the people can see and experience themselves,” he said.

He has visited 13 polling districts with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah machinery, supported by PKR and Amanah.

Campaigning as one team under GRS has provided more organised machinery and broader support.

“This certainly gives us added confidence,” Ruslan concluded. – Bernama
