Flood situation improves nationwide but Selangor sees evacuee rise

Flood evacuees decrease across most states except Selangor, with Terengganu remaining worst-hit at 9,584 people as river levels remain critical.

KUALA LUMPUR: The national flood situation showed significant improvement by midday today, with evacuee numbers declining across most states except Selangor.

Terengganu remained the worst-affected state with 9,584 people from 2,864 families sheltering in relief centres, down from 10,399 this morning.

Kemaman recorded the highest number at 2,271 people across 16 temporary relief centres, followed by Marang with 1,804 evacuees.

Sixteen roads across Terengganu remain closed due to flooding according to Public Works Department reports.

In Perak, evacuee numbers dropped to 6,173 people from 1,903 families across 46 relief centres in six districts.

Manjung district recorded the highest number at 2,307 evacuees, followed by Perak Hilir with 1,935 people.

Perlis saw evacuee numbers decrease to 6,159 people across 24 relief centres in Padang Besar, Arau and Kangar districts.

Major roads in Arau and Kangar districts are now fully passable after previously being flooded.

Selangor bucked the national trend with evacuee numbers rising to 4,366 people from 1,208 families.

Thirty-two relief centres are operating in Klang, Kuala Selangor, Sabak Bernam, Sepang and Kuala Langat districts.

Kedah reported 3,302 evacuees from 1,023 families across 14 relief centres in Kubang Pasu and Kota Setar.

Sungai Bata in Kedah has exceeded the danger level at 10.707 metres while Sungai Anak Bukit passed the warning level at 2.53 metres.

Pahang recorded 2,268 evacuees with Jerantut becoming the latest affected district housing 14 individuals.

Kuantan recorded the highest number at 849 evacuees, followed by Raub with 715 people.

Five major rivers in Pahang have exceeded danger levels including Sungai Pahang in Kuala Tembeling at 53.87 metres.

Kelantan’s evacuee numbers fell to 2,152 individuals from 803 families across five affected districts.

Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang remains above the danger level at 9.97 metres but shows a declining trend.

Negeri Sembilan reported 373 evacuees from 138 families across six relief centres as of 12.45 pm.

Melaka recorded 267 people from 76 families still in relief centres, down from 298 individuals this morning.

The Sekolah Kebangsaan Masjid Tanah relief centre has been closed after all evacuees returned home. – Bernama
