Flood victims evacuated as Kuantan relief centre deemed unsafe

Over 200 flood victims in Kuantan were moved to a safer centre overnight as continuous rain raises water levels and closes a major road.

KUANTAN: Rescue teams evacuated more than 200 flood victims from a community hall to a school here overnight.

The operation from the Seri Damai hall to Sekolah Kebangsaan Jaya Gading took three hours amid continuous rain.

Kuantan Civil Defence Force officer Major (PA) Zahidi Zainudin said the original centre was deemed at risk of flooding.

“The operation began at about 10 pm and was completed at 1 am, with victims transported using trucks,” he said.

He added that personnel from the Civil Defence Force, Fire and Rescue Department, and police were involved.

Meanwhile, Jalan Pekan-Kuantan near Universiti Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah was closed to all vehicles.

The State Disaster Management Committee secretariat announced the road closure at 7 am today.

Flood victim numbers in Pahang continue to rise, according to the Social Welfare Department.

Its Infobencana app recorded 2,206 victims from 695 families at 22 relief centres as of 9.30 am.

This is an increase from 2,077 victims from 648 families at 18 centres earlier this morning.

The affected districts are Kuantan, Maran and Rompin.
