Former army chief files police reports over leaked bank documents

Former army chief Gen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan lodges police reports over leaked confidential bank and military documents and defamatory social media posts.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former army chief Gen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan has lodged two police reports concerning the leak of his confidential banking documents and defamatory statements circulated on social media.

His lawyer, Aizul Rohan Anuar, said the first report was about the disclosure of protected documents, including bank statements and secret Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) files.

He stated that bank statements are protected under Section 133 of the Financial Services Act and should not be publicly disclosed.

“We do not know whether they were leaked by the banking institution, which is why Tan Sri lodged a report for the police to investigate who leaked them,” Aizul Rohan said.

He added that while authorities have a right to access such documents for investigations, it is illegal for ordinary individuals to obtain them.

The second police report involved false and defamatory statements made by an activist, particularly regarding the wearing of a luxury watch.

Aizul Rohan clarified that the watch was a commemorative MAF-issued timepiece inscribed with “Chief of Army Malaysia” and not a luxury brand as alleged.

“Even on the day Tan Sri was charged in court, I saw the watch myself, and it was definitely not a Patek Philippe,” he said.

He explained that this demonstrated how the matter had been manipulated to create baseless claims.

Muhammad Hafizuddeain is now seriously considering civil action against individuals who defamed him and the involved banking institutions.

The former army chief arrived at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters to lodge the reports.

On Jan 23, Muhammad Hafizuddeain pleaded not guilty at the Shah Alam Corruption Court to two charges of receiving RM145,000 from unlawful activities.

He also pleaded not guilty a day earlier at the Kuala Lumpur Special Corruption Court to four charges of receiving RM2.12 million in proceeds from unlawful activities.
