Heavy vehicle ban for Hari Raya to ease festive traffic

A temporary road ban on heavy vehicles will be enforced on key travel dates to reduce congestion and improve safety during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri exodus.

PUTRAJAYA: The government will impose a temporary road ban on heavy vehicles during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri period to reduce congestion and improve road safety as millions of Malaysians travel back to their hometowns.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the ban will be enforced on March 19–20 and March 28–29, as the country prepares for the annual balik kampung exodus.

He said the move is aimed at addressing the sharp increase in road accidents often recorded during the festive season.

“Every life lost on the road is a great loss to the country. We do not want the celebration of Ramadan’s victory to turn into a tragedy because of impatience or negligence on the road,” he said.

Loke urged the public to prioritise public transport where possible, while motorists were reminded to ensure their vehicles are in good condition and to adhere to speed limits and traffic regulations.

He also called on the Road Transport Department Malaysia (JPJ) to intensify enforcement efforts during the festive period to ensure road users reach their destinations safely.

Loke added that the upcoming festive travel period will require close coordination across the transport sector, including express bus operators, railway services and airlines, to ensure smooth journeys for passengers.

He also expressed appreciation to transport workers and enforcement officers who will remain on duty throughout the festive season to ensure Malaysians can travel safely and comfortably to their hometowns.
