Malaysia faces Japan as its toughest group stage opponent in the 2026 Thomas Cup, with a strong doubles lineup key to its quarter-final hopes.
KUALA LUMPUR: Japan has been identified as the primary obstacle for Malaysia’s progress from the group stage of the 2026 Thomas Cup Finals.
The draw placed Malaysia in Group B alongside Japan, England, and Finland, with the top two teams advancing to the quarter-finals.
Japan, the 2026 Badminton Asia Team Champions, present a balanced challenge with singles players like world number nine Kodai Naraoka.
Their strength is bolstered by Yushi Tanaka and Koki Watanabe, who were instrumental in Japan’s Asian team title win.
Malaysia’s singles department appears less formidable, relying on Leong Jun Hao, Justin Hoh, and Lee Zii Jia.
However, the national team holds a significant advantage in doubles, boasting three pairs inside the world’s top 10.
The formidable lineup includes world number two Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (pic) and world number six Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun.
Japan’s main doubles threat is the world number eight pair of Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi.
England, finishing third in the 2026 European Team Championships, also requires caution from the Malaysian squad.
The English pair of Ben Lane and Sean Vendy have previously defeated top Malaysian duos.
Despite this, Malaysia is expected to have sufficient strength to advance alongside Japan from the group.
In the Uber Cup, the Malaysian women’s team received a favourable draw in Group B.
They will compete against six-time champions Japan, Turkiye, and South Africa for a knockout stage berth.
Malaysia last won the Thomas Cup in 1992, while the women’s team has never clinched the Uber Cup.
The Thomas and Uber Cup Finals will be held in Horsens, Denmark from April 24 to May 3.
