KKR implements three maintenance methods to tackle pothole issues

KKR deploys routine, periodic and emergency maintenance on federal roads, with potholes to be patched within 24 hours of identification

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Works (KKR) is implementing three main maintenance methods to address the issue of damaged and potholed roads on federal routes.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said the methods encompass routine, periodic, and emergency maintenance, executed by appointed federal road maintenance concession companies.

Routine maintenance is carried out on a scheduled basis to prevent minor damage from worsening, such as early patching of potholes.

Periodic maintenance involves more comprehensive repairs to both the road surface and non-surface elements.

“For emergency maintenance, repair work is executed immediately if critical damage occurs that could jeopardise road user safety,” he said in Parliament.

“For federal roads, potholes must be patched within or at the latest 24 hours after being identified,” he added.

He was responding to a question from Zahari Kechik (PN-Jeli) who inquired about road maintenance allocations for each state in 2024 and 2025, and government efforts to effectively address road damage and pothole issues.

Responding to a question regarding differences in road maintenance levels between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, Ahmad said the government has allocated RM341.7 million for federal road maintenance in Sabah for 2025 through the Public Works Department (JKR).

He stated that maintenance of State roads and municipal roads is the responsibility of respective state governments through allocations from the Malaysian Road Records Information System (MARRIS) under the Ministry of Finance.

“If there are still severely potholed roads, the State Government is also responsible for maintenance, in addition to agricultural roads under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and village roads under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development,” he said.

“These are among the key players ensuring roads in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak are well-maintained,” he concluded.
