LANGKAWI: The Langkawi Development Authority is partnering with marine researchers to investigate jellyfish behaviour and population patterns in local waters.
This collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies follows a tragic incident where a two-year-old Russian child died from a jellyfish sting at Pantai Cenang on November 19.
LADA expressed heartfelt condolences to the family in an official statement, acknowledging the profound impact on the entire community.
“This heartbreaking incident has impacted our entire community, highlighting the gravity of the situation,” the authority stated.
The research initiative aims to develop evidence-based safety measures and improve emergency response capabilities for both tourists and residents.
As part of enhanced safety protocols, LADA is strengthening beach advisories and informational signage at high-traffic coastal areas.
Improved coordination between beach patrol teams, lifeguards, and tourism operators forms another key component of the safety upgrade.
Public awareness campaigns about jellyfish activity, seasonal risks, and safe swimming practices are being intensified across the island.
The authority reminded beachgoers of critical first-aid measures for jellyfish stings, emphasizing immediate exit from water and vinegar application.
Rubbing the affected area should be avoided as it may cause additional venom release, according to safety guidelines.
Visible tentacles should be carefully removed using tweezers without rubbing the skin during the process.
Medical attention should be sought immediately by calling 999 or visiting the nearest clinic or hospital.
CPR should be administered if the victim experiences breathing difficulties or becomes unresponsive while awaiting professional help.
