LLM plans to build 18 new motorcycle shelters on major highways this year to reduce accident risks, bringing total to 571
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) is targeting the construction of 18 new motorcycle shelters at major highways nationwide this year to reduce the risk of accidents involving motorcyclists.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the facilities will be built at six locations along the North-South Expressway, four on the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1), and two each on the Sprint Expressway (SPRINT), Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP), Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS) and Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway.
“A total of 218 motorcycle shelters were completed between 2023 and 2025, bringing the total number of such facilities along highways nationwide to 571.
“This initiative has proven effective in improving riders’ comfort and safety, while reducing the risk of motorcycle accidents on highways,” he said during Question Time in the Dewan Negara today.
He was replying to a question from Senator R. Thiagarajah on the safety measures being implemented and planned along highways to reduce risks faced by motorcyclists.
Ahmad said that besides constructing motorcycle shelters, the LLM has also made it mandatory for all highway concessionaires to appoint independent road safety auditors to conduct a Stage 5 (in-service road safety audit) every five years.
He said the periodic audits enable high-risk locations to be identified early, allowing concessionaires to implement mitigation measures and infrastructure improvements.
On statistics involving motorcyclists who stopped or sought shelter under bridges during rain, Ahmad said three accidents resulting in six fatalities had been recorded over the past five years.
According to the ministry’s statistics, one accident involving two fatalities was recorded in 2022, followed by one accident claiming three lives in 2023. No such cases were reported in 2024 and 2025, while one accident resulting in one fatality has been recorded so far this year.
