PM Anwar says Malaysia and Singapore are engaging constructively to resolve long-standing bilateral issues on airspace, water and maritime boundaries
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Singapore are taking steps to address long-standing bilateral issues through constructive engagement.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this includes matters of airspace, water and maritime boundaries.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Anwar said while these issues are complex, “there is no hostility” between the two countries.
“There are differences, of course, but there is no hostility,” he said.
He added that neither side will take actions to frustrate the movement of people or goods.
Anwar said both countries now have “the parameters clear, what is required by Singapore, what is required by Malaysia.”
This allows officials to work towards mutually beneficial solutions.
On airspace, discussions focused on ensuring efficient flight management to Changi and Seletar airports.
The goal is to facilitate smooth operations for flights, including those to Sabah and Sarawak.
Wong added that officials are undertaking a joint study to optimise air traffic management for future needs.
Regarding water, Anwar described it as “no longer a contentious issue” for Malaysia.
He acknowledged Johor’s growing water requirements.
Anwar welcomed Singapore’s proposal for potential investments in Johor River infrastructure.
This would strengthen resilience against dry spells or climate change.
Wong noted that officials are discussing the price of raw and treated water.
On maritime boundaries, Anwar said the matter is “more complex.”
He stressed the importance of working towards an amicable resolution.
“I’ve told Prime Minister Lawrence, my Cabinet colleagues, and our officials that we must work towards an amicable resolution,” Anwar said.
He added that progress should be made even if a complete resolution is not immediately possible.
Both leaders witnessed the signing of a supplementary agreement to the Rapid Transit System Link.
They also exchanged memorandums of understanding on preventing illicit drug trafficking and health cooperation.
