Communications Ministry to propose National Music Day to Cabinet, following study identifying need for dedicated music industry legislation.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry plans to propose the establishment of a National Music Day as an annual nationwide celebration.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the proposal will be discussed internally within the ministry soon, following the completion of a music industry study conducted with MyCreative Ventures.
“The proposal will be submitted to the Cabinet and if agreed upon by the Prime Minister, its implementation will be reviewed,” he told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of RIUH x ASEAN 2025.
He said he sees the need to celebrate the talents and contributions of local musicians through a special observance such as National Music Day.
The study identified several key issues in the music industry, particularly the need to establish a specific act to protect and regulate the sector.
“We found that many creative sectors, especially music, still lack dedicated legislation,” Fahmi said.
“Since last year, I have requested MyCreative Ventures and the Communications Ministry to examine the feasibility of introducing a specific act for the music industry.”
He added that the completed study outlines the direction for such legislation.
On a separate matter, Fahmi said RIUH x ASEAN 2025, held in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit, showcased performances by local and regional artists, as well as local fashion and culinary talents.
“RIUH has become an important platform in strengthening the creative industry, or what we refer to as the orange economy,” he said.
“The products featured not only highlight Malaysia’s cultural uniqueness but also have potential for international markets.”
He added that through RIUH x ASEAN, they aim to bring these local brands to the regional stage in line with the 47th ASEAN Summit.
Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Fauzi Md Isa, PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Ir Ts Izwan Ibrahim, and Nehchal Khanna, the managing director of QSR Brands, the event’s sponsor. – Bernama
