Malaysia suffers RM1.57 billion in fire losses this year

Fire losses in Malaysia exceeded RM1.57 billion from January to September, prompting calls for enhanced preventive measures nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR: Losses due to fires in Malaysia from January to September this year have exceeded RM1.57 billion.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the situation calls for more thorough preventive measures from all parties.

“The high total of losses were recorded even with firefighters doing their best to carry out various efforts including fire prevention,” he said during his speech at a ministry function at the Taman Sri Sentosa K9 operations centre.

To boost firefighting capabilities, the Fire and Rescue Department is replacing 40 fire engines over 20 years old with 30 new units.

This RM45 million corporate social responsibility programme by CLW Automobile Malaysia has delivered two units so far.

Nga said this initiative can minimise damage to fire engines and reduce repair costs for old assets.

He expressed confidence that the department is optimally prepared for possible floods during this year’s monsoon season.

Preparations include simulation training, readiness of personnel and assets, and improved standard operating procedures.

The ministry also stresses the importance of strategic coordination between all agencies during disasters.

It remains committed to mobilising Ihsan MADANI squads for humanitarian missions during and after floods. – Bernama
