Malaysian army’s credibility rests on integrity, not slogans: PM Anwar

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stresses that public trust in the army is built on professionalism and accountability, not mere slogans, during a meeting with the new army chief.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated that public trust in the Malaysian Army must be built on firm professionalism and integrity, not slogans.

He made the remarks during a courtesy call by the newly appointed Army Chief, General Datuk Azhan Md Othman, at his office in Parliament.

Anwar emphasised the need for the institution to remain credible and free from practices that could undermine its image.

“In the context of current challenges, including abuse of power and corruption that can tarnish institutional integrity, I also stressed that there can be no compromise on breaches of trust,” Anwar said in a Facebook post.

He added that this demands transparency and the courage to address weaknesses to safeguard the dignity of the armed forces.

The Prime Minister said the government will continue to support efforts to ensure the Army remains a respected and professional force.

This includes safeguarding the welfare of officers, personnel, their families and veterans.

General Azhan, who previously served as Chief of Staff of the Malaysian Armed Forces Headquarters, was appointed the 31st Army Chief effective January 1.
