Malaysian fire department completes food airlift to remote villages

The Fire and Rescue Department airlifted over 10.8 tonnes of food to remote Orang Asli communities in Gua Musang after monsoon rains damaged land access.

GUA MUSANG: The Air Unit of the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has completed a mission delivering over 10.8 tonnes of food to remote Orang Asli communities.

The two-day operation used an MI-17-IV helicopter to airlift 582 food baskets to villages cut off by monsoon-damaged land routes.

JBPM Air Divisions Operations Management Branch head Mohd Ruzaidi Ramlee said 22 personnel conducted eight flights to five remote areas.

Five flights delivered over 6.6 tonnes to villages in Pos Simpor, Pos Bihai, Pos Belatim and Pos Gob.

Three more flights today delivered over 4.1 tonnes to two villages in Pos Balar.

Kelantan and Terengganu JAKOA director Mohd Faedzyal Mohamed said the airlift operation began earlier this month.

A preliminary delivery of 383 food bags weighing 6,894 kg was made before bad weather forced a suspension.

He added that 3,824 Orang Asli in 43 remote villages have now received over 17 tonnes of food aid by air this monsoon season.

An earlier operation to airlift over 17 tonnes of supplies was suspended on Jan 9 due to bad weather.
