Malaysian universities to make constitution and history compulsory subjects

Constitution and Malaysian history will be compulsory subjects for all university students from this year, taught in Malay to strengthen national identity

PUTRAJAYA: General education subjects covering the Federal Constitution and Malaysian history will be included in the curriculum of all public and private universities starting this year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the subjects will be compulsory for all Malaysian students in higher education institutions.

He said the subjects will be taught fully in Bahasa Melayu.

“Starting this year, we will introduce revised general education subjects, which to be taught in Malay in all public and private universities for Malaysian students, namely the Federal Constitution and Malaysian History, in the curriculum,” he said at the launch of the National Education Blueprint (RPN) 2026-2035.

Anwar said the move aims to ensure all students have a basic understanding of the nation’s history and constitutional structure.

“It is unreasonable for Malaysian students to lack any understanding of their country’s Constitution and history,” he stated.

He emphasised that mastering this basic knowledge is essential for safeguarding the nation.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen national identity and civic awareness among the youth.

Separately, Anwar announced that 5,000 additional student accommodation places will be provided starting this year.

He cited rising complaints over limited and costly housing, particularly in urban areas, as the reason for the initiative.

The Prime Minister said the government has instructed government-linked investment companies (GLICs) to take the lead in developing student housing.

He stated that relying solely on private firms for this purpose could be controversial.

“We hope to begin this year at selected universities, with a target of providing 5,000 additional accommodation places,” he said.

These companies will work directly with universities to develop and prioritise accommodation for students.

The new education blueprint launched today reflects a comprehensive and phased alignment of national education policy.

It ensures continuity in human capital development from the school level to higher education.

The National Education Policy (RPN) is jointly led by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Education.

The MOHE is implementing it through the Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint 2026-2035.

The MOE is executing its part through the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2026-2035.
