Multisensory rooms help special needs students manage emotions and focus

Multisensory rooms for special education students in Perak aid emotional management and improve focus, with setup costs between RM30,000 and RM50,000.

IPOH: A new multisensory room provides students in the Special Education Integration Programme (PPKI) a space to manage emotions and improve focus.

Perak Education Department director Zulkafli Mohamed Mokhtar said such rooms create a conducive environment for students, particularly those with autism.

He stated the rooms make learning interactive and enjoyable while stimulating senses in a controlled setting.

“Research findings also show that multisensory environments help PPKI students improve their communication, cognitive and social skills,” Zulkafli said.

He emphasised that special education is a shared commitment to provide fair and effective opportunities for all students.

The director spoke at the opening of the PPKI Multisensory Room at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Rokam.

Pertubuhan Wanita Prihatin Perak chairman Norzita Rabaai said setup costs are estimated between RM30,000 and RM50,000.

She confirmed two other multisensory rooms are operational at Sekolah Coronation Park and SK Sri Sentosa in Kinta.

Norzita said the initiative raises community awareness about the needs of special education students.

“We want the community to understand that children with autism and students with special needs also have the potential to develop,” she added.

Gohub Capital Berhad chief executive officer Kenny Tan said his company’s contribution supports inclusive education facilities.

Tan revealed plans to expand educational contributions nationwide next year.

The company targets channelling between RM500,000 and RM1 million for the expansion in 2025. – Bernama
