Penang Chief Minister confirms NADMA assistance for flood victims as slope repair work continues on closed Jalan Tun Sardon road.
GEORGE TOWN: The National Disaster Management Agency will soon distribute assistance to eligible flood victims across Penang state.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed that NADMA has notified the state government about the upcoming aid distribution.
A total of 1,201 victims from 333 families were relocated to temporary relief centres between October 24 and October 27.
This recent flooding incident affected three districts specifically Seberang Perai Utara, Seberang Perai Tengah and Barat Daya.
Seven temporary relief centres operated during daytime hours to accommodate displaced residents.
Chow expressed gratitude that flood conditions normalised within two to three days without damage to state government assets or buildings.
He requested public patience regarding the ongoing closure of Route P14 Jalan Tun Sardon for slope cleaning and monitoring operations.
Chow emphasised the urgency of completing slope repair work since thousands of commuters travelling through Teluk Kumbar and Bayan Lepas face disruptions.
Slope stabilisation in the affected area will commence shortly potentially using concrete retaining wall construction methods.
“The sections damaged during the 2018 incident received complete repairs lasting seven to eight years,” Chow explained.
The recent collapse occurred along slope sections lacking concrete barrier installations according to the Chief Minister.
State Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari confirmed Penang Public Works Department continues debris clearance and rock breaking along Jalan Tun Sardon.
Heavy rainfall this morning temporarily suspended some cleaning and rock breaking activities for safety reasons.
Workers shifted focus to slope stabilisation while carefully installing protective canvas against soil erosion from rain.
Jalan Tun Sardon connecting Paya Terubong to Balik Pulau remains closed since October 23 evening following the slope collapse. – Bernama
