Perak’s 2026 budget, the largest in state history, focuses on welfare, governance, youth, environment, and food security
IPOH: The Perak State Legislative Assembly has unanimously approved a record RM1.61 billion budget for 2026.
The Supply Enactment 2026 Bill and the 2026 Development Fund motion were passed after a three-day debate involving 44 of the state’s 59 elected representatives.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad tabled the budget last week under the theme ‘Perak Makmur, Rakyat Sejahtera’.
It centres on five key priorities: public well-being, governance of state projects, human capital and youth development, environmental sustainability, and food security.
In his winding-up speech, Saarani said the state is studying a proposal to create permanent posts for Islamic kindergarten teachers.
“We initially intended to address Islamic kindergarten teachers as well, but JAIPk informed us that they are in the process of upgrading the positions,” he said.
He explained that once upgraded, the remuneration would be significantly higher than the previously planned allowance increase.
Saarani also clarified the nature of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) with the United States.
He stated that the ART is a trade framework and not an exclusive partnership that prevents trade with other nations.
The Menteri Besar emphasised that any trade deal involving Perak’s strategic minerals, including rare earth elements, must prioritise public interest.
“With regard to the involvement of foreign entities, including the United States, the state government emphasises that such involvement is limited to their role as trade partners,” he said.
He added that this does not grant foreign entities direct control over rare earth element production in the state. – Bernama
